Chance has two meanings; in English it can mean accident or hazard. In French "avoir de la chance" means to be lucky. In his exhibition, "Within My Tapestry," Murrie deals with questions about the nature of his abstract painting, the process of push and pull between accident, fate and luck.In the initial phase of his painting, chance or accident plays a major role as he pours various colors onto sheets of acetate in differing shapes and patterns. Shapes and forms emerge through the blending and manipulation of the paint; interlacing forms, bows and curves that constantly intersect. The second phase of his process is editing; finding the forms and shapes that work together. These forms are cut out of the acetate and adhered to a ground which has been prepared with color and with a spatial sketch in mind. There is, then, some control or destiny over where the work is headed.
