Paul Klein and Shelley Gilchrist juried the show, selecting works that showcase diverse styles of art in which encaustic is used.Among contemporary artists during the past dozen years, there has been a surging interest in exploring different uses of wax in their work, creating a virtual encaustic renaissance. Art work created with encaustic is recognizable by the many and varied effects that can be achieved, depending on the artist's intent: brilliant color; luminosity; surfaces that show brushstrokes, or are notably smooth or richly textured.Encaustic USA displays the versatility of wax in the painting, drawing, monoprint, photography, and sculpture of twenty-nine accomplished artists, in styles ranging from abstract (or abstracted) to representational to conceptual. The work highlighted in this exhibition makes full use of the medium of encaustic, and demonstrates its expressive potential realized through the individual artists' visions.
