AFFILIATE: Cherie SAMPSON
Cherie Sampson works in the areas of installation, performance and video art with a primary emphasis on the environment, creating projects in wilderness and rural settings in the U.S. and abroad. Historical, cultural and elemental layers of the site are integral to the working concepts and materials. Cherie's art involves the construction of sculptural spaces and the insertion of her body into the spaces in series of performances for live audiences and for the camera. A significant focus of her creative work has taken place within forest, woodland and mire landscapes and in the cultural and natural environments of Finland and Lapland. She received her MFA in Intermedia Art at the University of Iowa in 1997, followed by a Fulbright Fellowship in 1998. Cherie has participated in several international exhibitions, including pieces for Pori Museum of Contemporary Art, Sorsapuisto Park and Koli Mountain, Finland; Peatpolis, Holland, and the Festival of Water in Campagna, Italy. Recent U.S. exhibitions and video-screenings have taken place in California, Connecticut, Iowa, Illinois, Michigan and St. Louis, Missouri. Cherie currently lives in Missouri and is an Assistant Professor of Art at the University of Missouri, Columbia. Recently, Cherie was included in "The Coexistence of Silence & Dynamism," at Rhonda Schaller Studio/Gallery New York City, 547 West 27th Street, #529, from June 5-26, 2008.
